Desert life, so far
November 9, 2009 at 6:51 pm (Gor: The Author's Musings, Personal Storyline) (companion, free woman, friends, fun, FW clothes, Gor, gorean, home away from home, Jake, no meter, Oasis of the five blades, retire, roleplay, RP, sage blossom blog, Sage Blossom's Blog, Tahari clothes, Tahari FW)
An IC diary entry:
It’s quiet here. The mornings are the best times. The cold from the night is gone and the heat isn’t yet unbearable. The sunrises are glorious — golden rays drifting in under the leaves of dark, broad-leafed trees. Embers from the previous nights fire are still hot enough to start a cook fire for some breakfast and black wine. I suppose we should drink it sparingly. Who knows when another trader will come through with more.
After breakfast and cleanup the quiet is gone. The camp begins to stir, chores are done by free and slave alike. There’s no resting on one’s laurels in the desert. Most days aren’t bad. The work is tiring, but I’m not above it. Churning butter, preparing food, feeding verr and a long list of other sundry, boring things that take up my time. I admit I’m no good at most of this yet. But I’m muddling through. Trying hard to fit in.
My biggest gripe so far, aside from the irreparable damage done to most of my wardrobe, is the wind. When the wind blows here it’s like the world around you has turned on you. The dust gets whipped up and you choke, the sand stings your eyes. There’s nothing for it but to wrap a shawl around your head and run for cover.
Now for some OOC fun …
Oasis of the Five Blades thoughts on free woman attire in the desert camp is that they need not be clothed the same as they would in a large, crowded city. One description found in the books about women’s clothing is offered here. Though, for you quote-sticklers I’ll acknowledge, the quote here is refering to the attire of a slave. The reason it is applicable is because the difference between FW and slaves in the desert is that slaves weren’t veiled, wore their hair long and obviously, they wore their master’s collar around their neck. Oh, the books also mention that slaves weren’t generally given undergarments … I won’t even SAY how silly that sounds — I mean, one word: SAND. *ahem*
“She wore a long, bordered skirt, with scarlet thread at its hem, which swirled as she turned; she wore a jacket, tan, of soft kaiila-hair cloth, taken from the animal’s second coat, which had a hood, which she had thrown back; beneath the jacket she wore a cheap, printed blouse of rep-cloth, blue and yellow, which well clung to her.”
So, keeping that description in mind I’ve made an effort to find some pieces that fit this landscape and still keep in mind my desire for color and style. Let’s see what I found.
First, the shoes. For once I went for function rather than flair, choosing a durable walking boot rather than a more decorative slipper. I don’t have a quote handy, but the Tahari style boot is a leather footwear that comes to a point that curves slightly upward. ViGo makes a nice one in several different shades and offers both male and female sizes. Here are some pics. I think they’re adorable.

Now for the clothes. As described above I figured I was looking for separates that I could mix and match. And the main item on my list was to find a jacket that looked something like what was described in the book. I found an adorable suede hoodie at Benoir. It doesn’t have zippers or buttons. Looks patchy and handmade but still soft and comfy. I love it. The photo above has a great view of the back so you can see the hood.
Second on my list was tops. I searched for shirts and blouses that looked like they’d be made of some natural fiber. Any prints I purchased I tried to find patterns that were neutral or offered a tribal feel. All of the tops I bought wear longer-than-average. No belly button peep shows in the desert, y’all! And besides that, most of the cute skirts that I found were low-waisted, so I needed the length to cover the butt-crack! *laughs*
Finally, when shopping for skirt I looked for something at least ankle length with wearable, natural-looking cloth with reasonable amounts of flair just around the hem and maybe the waistline. I figure that since women probably made their own clothing they wouldn’t mind taking the time to embroider a good skirt with something pretty. Or maybe die some color into the edges. But unless the skirt is something made out of rep-cloth, it probably wouldn’t have an all-over pattern.
Want me to shut up and show you what I wore? OK, here ya go. Only 2 outfits, but I think you get the jist of things:

A quick note on the pieces I’m wearing in those pics: Jacket, Benoir Designs; Shirts, Sprawl and Gypsy Soul; Skirts, Mashooka and Nomine. If you know your SL designers then when you read those labels you may notice that not one of them ‘caters’ to Gor. So everything I’m wearing — except the veil and shoes — was bought ‘on Earth’ … something I take great glee in doing whenever possible. You end up with unique looks that don’t look like ‘boxed’ Gorean-wear. Love it.
Now then for a few words on the sim we’re playing in these days. This place is called Oasis of the Five Blades. It’s a masterfully designed oasis with none of the painful desert stereotypes. The ground has a hint of plant life. The trees cast dramatic shade onto the sands below. You can easily find and recognize the water source bubbling forth from the rocks. Small pools and streams irrigate the gardens and keep the trees watered. The layout has a natural feel and the overall atmosphere of the oasis is one of shelter and comfort. A rare place of water and life found in the heart of the perilous, dangerous, deadly Tahari desert.
And now for pictures:

One final note on Oasis of the Five Blades. It is a no-meter RP SIM with very strict Gorean philosophies and ideals enforced. If you visit I hope you enjoy it. But I encourage you to be aware of the culture you’re walking into
Are we kin?

I posted this notice recently on the Gorean Family Network:
Now taking interviews for extended family for occasional RP interaction. Roles I’m interested in filling are: Grandfather, grandmother, 6 aunts and any of their companions and/or offspring.
I’m seeking quality RPers willing to share my existing history and build a network of family that spans SL’s BtB Gor and diverse cultures.
The Grandfather and grandmother role will probably be difficult to fill, but the six aunts have entirely their own stories to write. And who knows how many cousins I have out there. Perhaps you’re one of them?
At this point most folks mention their build and appearance. If you read this blog you’ve seen pictures, but for those who haven’t I’ll give a brief description: Olive-to-tan skin that darkens quickly in the sun. A petite frame with slender limbs and angular, exotic features. Almond-shaped dark-blue eyes set in a heart-shaped face framed by thick raven-colored hair — mostly straight, with whisps of curl at the ends when it grows long.
Please read my history and if decide you’re interested, feel free to IM me or e-mail me at SageGoodfellow@gmail.com and let’s get to know each other.
Thanks!

Of course, my own family history — what I’ve written of it — is documented here in this blog’… but in case you want a quick summary, I’ll offer you ‘A brief history of Sage’ …
I am Sage Blossom, daughter of Leto and Liana, Caste of Clothiers (both now deceased).
My Grandfather is Omar of the Entertainers, his free companion is Thistle (formerly slave).
Their seven daughters, named after the flora of our world, are (from oldest to youngest) Talena, Dinara, Flamina, Veminia, Kandessa, Brakka and Liana (Sage’s mother).
The long story made short: Grandfather did some heroic deed that won the favor of a desert shiek. As thanks for the deed the shiek offered Grandfather a prize of his choosing. He chose a slave from the man’s vast harem. One of his most rare beauties. An exotic love slave, bred for passion, her only flaw a disfigured right foot. Falling madly in love with the woman he did an insane thing — he freed her and made her his companion. This is Grandmother. They had seven daughters. Each as beautiful and spirited as their mother. And each bearing the mark of their mother’s breeding, a club right foot. Grandfather made a fortune off the bride price of each arranged companionship. All six made excellent matches because of their beauty. The seventh was my mother, she was the difficult one. She met father and coerced grandfather into accepting the companionship. I came along sometime later. My mother and father perished in a fire shortly after I entered into an arranged companionship. That was many seasons and many adventures ago.

(Short note: As fan fiction, I’ve taken some liberties with known characters spoken of in some of the novels. Dont’ take offense. It’s more my homage to Norman’s work than anythign.)

October 30, 2009 at 3:36 pm (Uncategorized) (camp of the five blades, docks of port kar, Gor, gorean, poetess, Sage Blossom's Blog, slaver, tahari)
Jake turned in his notice. He’s retiring from the position of slaver of Port Kar. He wants time to enjoy his friends, his life and his women. Seems he’s decided to move away from the city.
I never thought I’d leave Port Kar. But I’m willing to give it a go. He’s my Man. Where he goes I’ll follow. We’ll see how desert life agrees with us. I’ll miss my friends — and enemies — of Port Kar. I’ll miss the random travelers popping in, the pew-pew raids from other cities and the stray she-urt wannabes who wander in with no clue about Gor or life as a street dweller.
But, I can’t say I’m not excited about this new adventure. So, let us go into the desert and seek out new adventures. Find our balance as a family and enjoy each others company. Huzzah. …
Now don’t mind me. I’ve some shopping to do. Seems the Tahari have some interesting views on Gorean fashion…. This could be… difficult. *haha*
AFK-ish this coming week
October 25, 2009 at 7:39 am (Uncategorized) (afk, docks of port kar, Gor, gorean, Sage Blossom's Blog, unplug, vacation)
Taking a vacation into the mountains/hills of North Carolina. Hoping to get some writing done and basically unplug from work and deadlines. I’ll be out of SL for most of the week, but I’ll have internet and my laptop so maybe I’ll see about some photo posts and rambling updates. And as always I can be found on facebook, twitter and you can always g-mail me
I wish you well!

Oh, to dance!
October 22, 2009 at 11:12 pm (Gor: The Author's Musings) (collar, dance, festivals, free companions, free maiden dances, free woman, Gor, gorean, love dance, sensual dance, slavegirl)
“The Gorean girl is, even if free, accustomed to slavery; she will perhaps own one or more slaves herself; she knows that she is weaker than men and what this can mean; she knows that cities fall and caravans are plundered; she knows she might even, by a sufficiently bold warrior, be captured in her own quarters and, bound and hooded, be carried by tarn back over the wall of her own city. Moreover, even if she is never enslaved, she is familiar with the duties of slaves and what is expected of them; if she should be enslaved she will know , on the whole, what is expected of her what is permitted her and not; moreover the Gorean girl is literally educated, fortunately or not, to the notion that it is of great importance to know how to please men; accordingly, even girls who will be free companions, and never slaves, learn the preparation and serving of exotic dishes, the art of walking, and standing, and being beautiful, the care of a mans equipment, the love dances of their city, and so on.”
(Nomads of Gor, pg. 63)
So often in SL Gor I hear people go on and on about proper FW behavior. And one of the things I find most absurd is the constant assertion that free women would not dance in public. I think that assertion is incorrect and I will discuss here the reasons why.
I have been considering the concept of dance within Gorean society for some time. Goreans had festivals. Musicians. Singers. Obviously then during times of great celebration there would be revelry and rejoicing. I don’t know a human alive that can refrain from tapping a toe or spinning wildly when real joy strikes their hearts. And Goreans, even moreso than Humans, are known for reveling in beauty and happiness and joy.
In the long lifespan of a Gorean there would be many occasions to dance.
Companionship ceremonies and seasonal festivals would be filled with music and laughter. These celebrations would often have musicians playing to the crowd. And would it really be that odd to see a group of men and women spinning and stepping lively to a merry tune?
Though I haven’t been able to find in the books any direct evidence of women dancing — Norman focused very much on the activities of men and slaves and left us quite a bit of work in deducing what was left for the average free woman — I have found indirect references to the fact that that free women likely do dance in public.
“The dance in the circle — was not the stately dance of free maidens — but slave dance, that form of dance, in its thousands of variations, in which a female may excitingly and beautifully, marvellously and fulfillingly, express the depths and profundities of her nature. In such dance the woman moves as a female, and shows herself as a female, in all her excitingness and beauty. It is no wonder that women love such dance, in which dance they are so desirable and beautiful, in which dance they feel so free, so sexual, so much a slave.”
Magicians of Gor, p. 44
From the above quote we can deduce that the dance of a free maiden would be modest, graceful and purposeful. These would nothing like the wild, writhing dances of ecstasy performed by the slavegirl. But the practiced, choreographed, delicate movements of a modest and graceful woman.
Now I know what some of you are thinking. I know that there is as quote in one of the books about how Free Women wouldn’t dare dance in public. But, I think as happens often with many quotes, the statement has been taken out of context and too much emphasis has been put on a narrow point of the quote. Let me explain:
“The principle he had alluded to pertains to conduct in a free woman which is taken as sufficient to warrant her reduction to slavery. … Indulgence in sensual dance is another case. Sensuous dance is almost always performed by slaves on Gor. A free woman who performs such dancing publicly is almost begging for the collar. In some cities the sentence of bondage is mandatory for such a woman.”
(Renegades of Gor
, 21:372)
As you can see, the quote specifies that the dance would be sensuous. Not every dance incites lust in a dancer or audience. To say so is foolishness.
Consider the various cultures that Norman drew upon in the creation of his novels. When I imagine the wild, sensuous dance of the slavegirl it brings to mind the erotic dance of east indian belly dancers. But when trying to imagine something more controlled, stately and poised, something appropriate for a free woman, I think of the story-telling dances of Japan’s Geisha. These are the differences I’m trying to explain.
Women danced in public — a fact we can come to based on the allusion to free maiden dances. But women who performed sensual dances in public were believed to be begging the collar. Therefore we can safely deduce that the difference between free women dances and slave dances were very obviously different in style and form — not just costume (or lack there of.)
I hope you’ve enjoyed my essay on dancing in Gorean culture.
I’d appreciate any comments, additions or questions you have.

No ceremony. A lady walks past and he stops her. “Excuse me, but you did say you were of the scribes, lady? Would you pause a moment and do me the favor of being a witness.” She stops and agrees. He throws me over his shoulder, me laughing and kicking the whole time. A large hand swats my bottom and I halt my meager struggles. I’m his. He’s mine. It’s witnessed.

Topics of interest and oh how I need more time
October 13, 2009 at 11:26 pm (Gor: The Author's Musings, Uncategorized) (docks of port kar, Gor, gorean, homestone, poetess, Poetry, Port Kar, Sage Blossom's Blog, secondlife, SL)
Goodness knows life got busy for a while there. The Bards forum is growing. It boomed at first, but now it’s settled down to a low hum. I have some unfinished business there before I can relinquish administrative priveleges and just enjoy being a contributing member, but I’ve enjoyed offering my humble services to the group.
I have so many ideas for new works, new poems. I desperately need time alone to write. But RL is kicking my butt, and when I have a little down time I just want to log in to SL and spend a little time with friends in my city.
Goodness knows the city needs every soul it can get. My homestone’s traffic took a beating when the adult rating kicked in.
I’m so annoyed that there are Gorean sims with the gall to remain ‘mature’ rated.
As IF gor isn’t adult. *ha!* *rolls her eyes*
Poem projects I have thought of are as follows:
A naked lady painting a room purple. (inspired by RL)
The lonely blacksmith polishing his sword and helmet. (inspired by SL)
The frigid free woman who’se cold beauty burns the men who approach her. (inspired by SL)
Something short on drinking and being bored and the trouble it brings. (inspired by SL)
And several short works on Autumn and seasons changing.

Bards of Gor: Original creative writers of Gor
September 25, 2009 at 7:12 am (Gor: The Author's Musings, Poetry, Prose and creative writing) (bards of gor, essay, essayist, Gor, gorean, gorean bards, gorean forums, humor, lymric, lyricist, lyrics, poet, poetess, Poetry, Sage, sage blossom blog, Sage Blossom's Blog, satire, secondlife, short story, sirius, storyteller, thoughts, writer, writing)

Original creative writers of Gor.
Do you write? Do you have an appreciation for Gor or Gorean philosophy or culture? (If the answer is no, what the hell are you doing reading my blog? *laughs*)
Sirius Karillion, guard of Port Kar, approached me in-world months ago via IM and asked if I would join a group he created titled “Bards of Gor”. Well, he’s a dashing fellow, though he’s only one eye and smells o’ sour tospits when he’s been drinkin’ too much (Kidding, Sirius!), so of course I accepted.
The in-world group is growing daily and I’m thrilled to see our numbers swell. We have aspiring poets and lyricists as well as established, professional writers. But this particular post is about our newest innovation, well, Sirius’ innovation really, the Bards of Gor forums.
Allow me for a moment to direct your attention to an amazing effort being put forth by Sirius and his merry band of bards who are tirelessly working to improve your SL-Gor experience with live entertainment in-world as well as provide a forum and resource site for writers of varying skill levels.
Every day new resources are posted, poems and stories are offered for critiques, people share inspiration and techniques for writing. In essence we’re attempting to build a community of people who all have two things in common: Gor and writing.
It’s a new movement and I’m pleased to be a part of it. If you think you’d enjoy being part of a growing Gorean writers community I encourage you to visit Bards of Gor and see for yourself what it has to offer.

Town of Verr Fjord: Sage Blossom’s tour
September 22, 2009 at 11:22 pm (Gor: The Author's Musings, Personal Storyline) (Gor, free woman, poetess, humor, Port Kar, fun, Sage, RP, Caste, secondlife, roleplay, gorean, pirates, sage blossom blog, Sage Blossom's Blog, SL, Mountains, Town of Verr Fjord, review, city review, torvaldsland, gorean blog 2009, gorean forums, gor pics, secondlife pics, gorean blog)
I decided that since I enjoyed my lark around Town of Verr Fjord so much, I’d go back and take pictures to share with you all. It’s really a lovely little setting and has much more to offer than those little outhouses. Though mind you, if anyone needs to know where the facilities are, you can direct them to Verr Fjord with confidence!
In case you missed out on the post that inspired me to do this blog, I’ll repost that photo again here.

I guess they wanted that extra touch of realism.

The view to the right as you come in on the main road through the market.

The main hall in the town square. Check out those defenses. Wow.

The ship-builder's docks. Great setup!

More ship-building and loading docks.

Check out the log flume. They must build a ton of ships to have that in place. Wow.

Walking past the iron works.

The view from above of the iron works.

Dangerous Mines! Beware!

Really? I mean... It's like they're DARING me to walk in there.

Down into the mines I go...

Ha! I laugh in the face of danger!

Did you hear that noise?!
…. the author would like to take a moment to apologize for her lack of sensitivity toward mine workers and the perils they work through. And then encourage you all to giggle at the stupid face she’s making in that last pic.
Now on with the tour.

Hey that's really cool. And look, there are stairs leading right up to it..

Log flume thingy... let's take a closer look...

It's comin' right for us!

Caves? ... You KNOW I can't resist!
The caves actually are an adorable and clever disguise for a series of teleporters to get residents into their sim quickly from the main town center.

Cute little residential cottages for rent. *brrrr* It's freaking COLD up here.

*heh* I think I made a little friend. Though he looks like he probably eats a lot. So I left him there.
